A garden pond: a dream come true

Water is a magical element that has held great fascination since ancient times. According to tradition, Water, Air, Earth and Fire represent the four primordial elements, which have existed in their present form since before the formation of planet Earth and each ascribed a unique benefit.

Water is afforded a vital role because it determines the formation of every living being, thus becoming a symbol of the life it creates, purifies and renews.

As well as being the most ornamental of natural features, a garden pond is a genuine place of relaxation, which a growing number of garden enthusiasts are choosing to create.

Think for a moment about your busy life, punctuated by appointments, work, the gym and commitments for your children. How nice would it be to have a pond and be able to stop and observe its peaceful rhythms even just for a few seconds? Contemplating nature, as well as bringing peace to the heart, is one of the most beautiful experiences you can have, because it makes you appreciate its inherent infinite beauty. (picture above)

How to design your pond

Building a pond doesn't require huge areas of land or special permits, you just need to bear a few things in mind when designing and constructing it to make your dream a reality.

An important ally to your garden's wildlife

Though your pond will be man-made, it will become an important ally to your garden's wildlife. And it will give you great satisfaction.

Sun, trees and wind

First, choose a partially sunny position, as full sun exposure promotes the growth of algae. It is also best to choose an area away from trees, which, during periods of leaf fall, will foul the water. Wind, on the other hand, is your pond's friend because it naturally adds oxygen to the water.

Nothing should be left to chance

Choose flat terrain, to make construction easier, of at least 15 m2. If you intend to dig your pond on a slope, extra care may be required in the planning stage, because you may need retaining walls or embankments. Nothing should be left to chance: choose which plants you would like to use carefully, both in the pond (aquatic) and around the edge. Symbiosis with all types of plant is not always possible or beneficial. The same applies to fish and other animals. Recharge your batteries in close contact with nature!

Translating your dream into a reality is not difficult. A pond is an ecosystem which regenerates itself and requires only a little attention during the initial set-up phase. Just a few steps are all it takes to make it magically come to life and evolve into a secret and changing habitat, a source of continuous joy and wonder. Adorned with colourful flowers, lush shrubs, playful fountains and inhabited by fish and other small animals of numerous shades and colours, it will become your corner outside of time, which, in silence, will help you put aside all your cares and worries.
